4 Things to Consider Before Applying for Your Next Tech Job

    December 5, 2022
Tech hiring isn’t slowing down anytime soon. For the first five months of 2022 , nearly 2.2 million tech jobs were advertised. That’s a shocking 52% increase versus the same period of the previous year. This means there are plenty of options for professionals in the technology industry interested in growing their careers, finding new employers, or seeking out promotions. However, it’s essential you consider these four things before taking that step to apply for a new role.

    Assess your skills and goals.

First, take a look at your resume as you’re considering making a move. Make sure you’ve included all your projects, accomplishments, and statistics. And to take it a step further, considert the gaps in your experience and which skills you’d like to add to your portfolio. With the abundance of roles on the market right now, you have room to choose where you take your expertise. So, use this opportunity to ensure that any potential employer fits your long-term goals and will help guide your career in an upward trajectory.

    Weigh your priorities.

With hybrid and remote work on the rise, tech experts are reconsidering their priorities. In fact, a staggering 85% of tech workers said they work either fully remote positions or are following hybrid models. So, before submitting your next application, define what’s important to you. Ask yourself questions like these:
    • Do you prefer a hybrid or remote work environment?
    • Do you value a flexible working schedule?
    • Do you prefer working for a small company with a scrappy mentality?
    • Or a large company with abundant resources?
Once your priorities are defined, save time by only seeking out companies and roles that align.

Get a feel for company culture.

Company culture is more than just a buzz-phrase. When you’re weighing options and trying to decide where to take your talent, the culture of a team orcompany is equally as important as a role's responsibilities. As an expert in your field, you have the power to decide where you take your talents. With the plethora of  online information available, you can get a good idea of a company’s culture before applying. Look for information on the company’s mission and values, how they handle layoffs, and their stance on social issues important to you.
