    Substitute Teacher Story: Lizbetty Ramos

    Substitute teacher shares about finding meaningful work as a Cuban immigrant.

    Lizbetty Ramos came to the United States a year ago to make a better life for her family. She left behind a career as a podiatrist in Cuba due to economic and political pressures. She was nervous about “starting over from scratch”. Within a few months, she was thrilled to use her education and Spanish-speaking skills as a substitute teacher.

    In this Q&A, Lizbetty shares why substitute teaching is the ideal job for her as she begins a new life in America.

    Being new to the country, how did you start on the path of substitute teaching?

    I found a poster saying they needed substitute teachers in my local school district. Once I applied, the hiring process went very fast. Kelly Education immediately answered and guided me to become a substitute teacher. It was incredible.

    People were impressed that I was in the U.S. for less than a year and found work as a substitute teacher. That made me feel very proud of what I had achieved.

    I like it a lot. I’m very passionate about it. All the workers and teachers at the school help you. They are like a family at school.

    How important is schedule flexibility to you?

    This job has been a blessing. It’s a perfect job for someone with a family. It gives you the flexibility to schedule to accommodate your needs.

    You don’t have to be there every day. If you have another appointment, you can give notice that you won’t be able to take a job.

    What would you tell others considering becoming a substitute teacher?

    I highly recommend it. My advice to anyone who wants to become a substitute teacher is that you should try! It has so many benefits.

    The work makes me feel satisfied and supported. No one can imagine what it brings to you personally when you are in a class and inspire students. It’s really beautiful.

    Lizbetty Ramos llegó a los Estados Unidos hace un año para hacer una vida mejor para su familia. Dejó atrás una carrera como podóloga en Cuba debido a presiones económicas y políticas.

    Estaba nerviosa por "empezar de nuevo desde cero". Dentro de unos meses, estaba encantada de usar su educación y habilidades en español como maestra sustituta.

    Siendo nueva en el país, ¿cómo comenzaste en el camino de la enseñanza como sustituta?

    Encontré un cartel que decía que necesitaban maestros sustitutos en mi distrito escolar local. Una vez que apliqué, el proceso de contratación fue muy rápido. Kelly Education respondió de inmediato y me guió para convertirme en maestra sustituta. Fue increíble.

    La gente estaba impresionada de que estuviera en los EE. UU. por menos de un año y encontrara trabajo como maestra sustituta. Eso me hizo sentir muy orgullosa de lo que había logrado.

    Me gusta mucho. Me apasiona mucho. Todos los trabajadores y maestros de la escuela te ayudan. Son como una familia en la escuela.

    ¿Qué tan importante es para ti la flexibilidad de horario?

    Este trabajo ha sido una bendición. Es un trabajo perfecto para alguien con una familia. Te da la flexibilidad de programar para adaptarte a tus necesidades.

    No tienes que estar allí todos los días. Si tienes otra cita, puedes avisar que no podrás aceptar un trabajo.

    ¿Qué le dirías a otras personas que están considerando convertirse en maestros sustitutos?

    Lo recomiendo altamente. Mi consejo para cualquiera que quiera convertirse en maestro sustituto es que ¡lo intente! Tiene muchos beneficios.

    El trabajo me hace sentir satisfecha y apoyada. Nadie puede imaginar lo que te aporta personalmente cuando estás en una clase e inspiras a los estudiantes. Es realmente hermoso.
